작업노트

나는 시간이 지나간 자리를 바라본다. 표면에 남은 결, 흐르다 멈춘 자국, 겹쳐진 층 사이의 미세한 틈에서 눈에 보이지 않던 시간을 발견한다. 나의 작업은 그 흔적을 따라가며 시작된다.

색이 흐르고 서로 만나는 순간, 화면에는 내가 예상하지 못한 움직임이 생긴다. 색은 퍼지고, 서로 밀어내고, 섞이며 저마다의 길을 만든다. 나는 화면을 기울이고 열을 가하며 그 흐름에 개입한다. 그러다가 어느 순간 손을 멈추고 바라본다. 어디까지 이끌고 어디에서 놓아줄 것인지, 그 사이에서 화면의 결이 만들어진다.

하나의 층이 굳고 그 위에 또 다른 층이 쌓이면, 앞선 시간은 아래에 남는다. 어떤 흔적은 가려지고 어떤 흔적은 투명한 표면을 통해 다시 드러난다. 나는 이 중첩 속에서 지나간 시간이 현재의 모습에 스며드는 방식을 본다. 화면에 남은 흐름은 멈춰 있지만, 그 안에는 색이 움직였던 순간과 기다림의 시간이 함께 머문다.

내가 말하는 ‘틈(Aperture)’은 층과 층, 표면과 깊이 사이에서 시선이 들어가는 자리다. 균열처럼 보이는 작은 경계에도 빛이 닿으면 새로운 공간이 열린다. 빛은 표면에 머물기도 하고 투명한 층을 통과하며 아래에 잠겨 있던 색과 흔적을 불러내기도 한다. 바라보는 위치에 따라 달라지는 깊이는 한 화면을 여러 번 만나게 한다.

자연에서 마주한 색과 움직임은 작업 안에서 다시 흐른다. 물결이 지나간 자리, 빛이 스치며 바뀌는 색, 풍경 앞에서 잠시 머물렀던 감각이 화면 위의 움직임과 만난다. 그 과정에서 익숙한 기억은 낯선 풍경이 되고, 나 역시 완성된 화면 앞에서 미처 알지 못했던 감정을 발견한다.

나는 작품을 보는 이가 자신의 속도로 그 표면에 머물기를 바란다. 겹쳐진 색 사이를 들여다보고, 작은 틈을 따라 시선을 옮기며, 각자의 기억과 감각이 닿는 자리를 발견했으면 한다. 내가 남긴 시간의 흔적 위로 누군가의 시간이 조용히 포개질 때, 작업은 또 다른 깊이를 갖게 된다.

I look at the places where time has passed. In the grain of a surface, the marks of a flow that has come to rest, and the fine openings between overlapping layers, I discover time that was once invisible. My work begins by following these traces.

As colors flow and meet, movements emerge on the surface that I could not have anticipated. They spread, push against one another, and mingle, each finding its own path. I intervene in this flow by tilting the surface and applying heat. Then, at a certain moment, I stop and look. The texture of the work takes shape between how far I guide it and where I let go.

As one layer settles and another builds upon it, the time that came before remains beneath. Some traces are concealed; others reappear through the transparent surface. In this layering, I see how the past seeps into the present. The flow has stopped, yet the moments when color was in motion and the time spent waiting remain within it.

What I call an “Aperture” is a place where the gaze enters between layers, between surface and depth. When light touches even a small boundary that resembles a crack, a new space opens. Light sometimes rests on the surface; at other times, it passes through transparent layers, bringing submerged colors and traces into view. As the depth shifts with the position of the viewer, the same work can be encountered anew.

The colors and movements I encounter in nature flow again within my work. The wake of a ripple, colors changing as light brushes past, and the sensations of pausing before a landscape meet the movements on the surface. In this process, familiar memories become unfamiliar landscapes. I, too, discover feelings I had not yet recognized when I stand before the finished work.

I hope viewers will linger on the surface at their own pace. Looking between overlapping colors and following small openings with their eyes, they may find a place where their own memories and senses connect. When someone else’s time quietly settles over the traces I have left, the work gains another depth.
